What to do when bearing capacity is insufficient
This is the story of how a fire, a yacht race and America’s third wealthiest citizen proved a boon for one Texas-based structural component manufacturer.
- Not stating a SOW can also subject a CM to the prospect of increased claims and liability.
- A manufacturer should strongly consider developing a SOW template that can be used in its bids or proposals and as an addendum or attachment to the customer contracts it signs.
Builder complaints regarding the growth of surface mold on the lumber contained within wood structural components, while not as frequently encountered as in the past, continue to pose a dilemma in some markets. The dilemma comes in the form of builders either demanding moldfree wood based products, or when mold appears on a component at the jobsite, they are demanding that suppliers provide an immediate remediation (e.g., removal) of the mold, regardless of the cause or the cost. And, where structures are improperly designed or constructed and mold growth appears years later, component manufacturers (CMs) have found themselves into construction defect litigation with various types of complaints being asserted.
Established in 1983, the Structural Building Components Association (SBCA) is the only international trade association representing manufacturers of structural building components. Its membership also includes truss plate suppliers, original equipment manufacturers and resellers, computer software companies, lumber suppliers, builders and professional individuals in the fields of engineering, marketing and management.

- Combining fiber reinforcement with finger jointed lumber could be a win for both the lumber and component industries.
- With in-line framing, CMs can remove studs and plate material, and spread the stud spacing out to 24", which, in some cases, allows for better insulation methods.
- The key to new product development is generating sales revenue immediately by establishing design values and engineering reports that give assurance of the product’s equivalent code-compliant performance.
Contrary to the popular marketing slogan, not everything that happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas, like the “youth movement” that unexpectedly sprang up during those two days of discussion. What started as a frank observation that industry leadership needs greater participation and buy-in from the younger generations led to several productive ideas on how to begin achieving that goal.

As Trussway Manufacturing approaches 50 years in business, we have taken a deep, introspective look at our business, our industry, and the future.
SCORE provides simplified certifications that center on programs that matter most to CMs’ customers.
In May of 2018, Door Creek Church broke ground on their new DeForest Campus just minutes north of Madison, Wisconsin. The church was given ten acres by a local developer in what amounts to a suburb of Madison on the edge of urban reach mixed with strong agricultural ties. Originally, a metal building was designed for the church but costs redirected the church’s architect to wood frame construction.
The largest hurdle to hosting a plant tour is having enough time. That's why we continue to create tools like those below to make it as easy as possible to host a tour.
The primary motivation to hosting a plant tour is to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with a supplier, potential customer, a city official, and many others in your community.
How two CMs approach data, and the important role it plays
According to an online survey of component manufacturers (CMs), 96 percent of respondents indicated they have had a plumber damage or modify their products after installation.
Challenging or unusual projects typically stretch a component manufacturer’s (CM’s) operational capabilities in some fashion.
A good headline and photo draw in the reader's interest, but in reality, this is a very scary photo. This news item on the home page of MSN.com caught the attention of Steven Spradlin, President of Capital Structures in Fort Smith, AR. Most notably, this is a great real-world jobsite example of framer engineering that doesn't comply with construction site safety requirements. To put it in Spradlin's words, “Holy crap, someone call OSHA!” (This is what he wrote, so it’s probably a paraphrase of what he actually said.)
BCMC attendees brought their athletic skills to the BCMC show in San Antonio.
Can designing with lateral resistance in mind improve production QC?
Component Manufacturers - These companies manufacture and sell trusses, wall panels, related structural components and/or subcomponents.
Associate Members - These companies supply products, equipment, machinery or services to Component Manufacturers. This category includes professional members.
It’s not often that a component manufacturer (CM) is asked to do a project that publicly displays the components they design and manufacture. If done right, these opportunities have the potential to positively represent the industry to the entire community.
