We’ve been kicking around the idea of changing things up in the pages of SBC Magazine for quite a while. The changes you see in this first issue of 2016 are the culmination of countless conversations with component manufacturers, suppliers and the general readership, as well as a lot of strategizing on how we can best help you keep abreast of all that is going on in the structural building components industry. Ultimately, our desire is for this to be your magazine, full of content written collaboratively with your peers.
The worth of one’s efforts is sometimes a difficult thing to communicate to others, whether they be customers, employees or, in SBCA’s case, members. It helps to have a concrete example that illustrates the value your work provides.
I had an interesting conversation recently with an engineer that I have known for at least 15 years.
Lee Kirgan, construction manager for Operation Finally Home (OFH), has been busy making the rounds of SBCA chapter meetings. OFH is a non-profit organization that builds mortgage-free homes for wounded veterans and their families. In years past, SBCA partnered with OFH to build one home each year in the city that hosted BCMC. This year, SBCA’s relationship with OFH expanded nationwide.

In order to assure continued compliance with both the letter and the spirit of the antitrust laws, participants in SBCA and the local chapters are reminded of the following important policy:
This report will explore some special floor loading issues that are not specifically mentioned in the building codes and require special attention to ensure that the floor system is properly designed with no serviceability issues. The following are the major issues that will be discussed: stone/ceramic tiles, large concentrated loads and floor vibrations.
Minimum top and bottom chord permanent lateral restraint/bracing of structural roof or floor trusses is assumed to be adequate when using code-compliant roof and/or ceiling diaphragms. This lateral restraint/bracing is typically accomplished with code-compliant roof /floor sheathing and fastener spacing and/or code-compliant gypsum ceiling material and fastener spacing or purlins at a given on-center spacing.
- The 2006 IRC changes that apply to roof framing or roof trusses include: R301.5 attic loading; R802.10.2.1 snow loading; R802.10.3/R502.11.2 reference to BCSI; R802.3.1 rafter/ceiling joist connections; and R806.4 conditioned attic spaces.
- The 2006 IRC changes that apply to wall panels include: R302, R309 exterior wall; R317 unit separation; R502.2.1 load path through floor at braced wall lines; R602.3.2 wall plate splices; R602.10 braced wall lines; and R703 exterior wall covering and fasteners.

- In just under 10 years, BCSI has evolved from the booklet into Summary Sheets, JOBSITE PACKAGES, online courses and the much larger book.
- Including the JOBSITE PACKAGE or BCSI book on invoices is an excellent best practice in case a project heads in the wrong direction.
- SBCA Chapters have developed great relationships and reaped many benefits for their time and effort through BCSI educational programs in their markets.

Suddarth, Ph.D., P.E., in this case, to demonstrate the potential problems associated with using averages in calculations. When Stan Suddarth passed away on June 9, 2011, in Newburg, Oregon, he left behind a significant legacy in academia and the structural building components industry. In 1986, he was one of the first two inductees into the SBCA Hall of Fame in recognition of his considerable contributions to the industry.
