We sincerely encourage all SBCA CM Members to read this article on SPIB's Supplement #9, which contains an in-depth analysis of a series of next steps that all members should consider implementing that are intended to provide a best practices roadmap.
- A lot has changed in the components industry over the past two decades, and a new Framing the American Dream (FAD) project would allow us to quantify just how much, as well as detail our product’s benefits over other framing methods.
- Beyond FAD, SBCA is also focusing on helping component manufacturers across the country fight an unfair provision in the model building code, R501.3.
- As you think about investing in the future of your business, think about how much you’re willing to invest this year in these two projects to ensure a bright future for our industry.
- Meet SBCA’s new president, Steve Stroder.
- SBCA developed SCORE and other programs to help CMs run their companies as safe, productive, and risk-free as possible.
- Banding together and implementing these tools not only benefits individual companies, it elevates our industry.
From increasing security to improving the quality of temporary workers, the cameras Woodhaven installed six years ago have provided a significant return on investment.
Bruce Jones, a turnkey contractor in Hanover, Pennsylvania, has been in the wall panel industry for over 30 years. He estimates that in 2017 his company built over 80 miles of walls. That experience has taught Bruce a number of ways to make a better panel

According to some media reports, toxic mold poses a major risk to the health of Americans. Although there is little scientific basis for these claims, the headlines have caused many homeowners to focus on mold.
Housing is fixed.
At least that is the belief of most members of Congress, based on feedback from lawmakers and legislative staffers on Capitol Hill. If you were to only listen to the national media to formulate an opinion on housing, you would probably reach a similar conclusion. While it is true that the residential construction market has definitely improved, with April housing starts over 850,000 and total U.S. permits just over one million, housing is certainly not “fixed.”
SBCA has published extensive information regarding raw material performance characteristics, since 2009, when SBCRI first learned of the disparities between OSB and lumber published design values and SBCRI tested performance. We published a 2015 article entitled “ Why is SBCA & SBCRI Publishing Investigative Reports? ”
Most component manufacturers understand the need to have a website – it is the 21st century, after all. But is your website working as hard as it can for your company?
Take an “acquirer’s view” of your company to understand its value
“In the almost five decades I have been in the component manufacturing business, I have never had a lumber mill ask me what I thought they should produce,” said Bob Ward (Southern Components). “They didn’t care what I needed; instead, I had to choose from what they provided.”
While frustrating for component manufacturers like Ward, and less than optimal for both sides, the top-down model of lumber suppliers dictating the lumber properties they sell and essentially telling their customers, “if you do not buy what we produce, we’ll sell it to someone else,” has been standard operating procedure throughout the years.
- SBCA brought concerns over SYP visual grades to the forefront nearly two years ago.
- SPIB conducted testing, without requesting input from SBCA and other interested parties, which resulted in a recommendation to reduce Southern Pine design values by as much as 30 percent. This could have a considerable negative impact on light-frame construction and the U.S. economy.
- The key to solving this issue is communication; SBCA is working with a strong coalition to develop a more reasonable solution.
The case summary shown below, from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), rationalizes some homeowner reactions to recent media coverage surrounding [toxic] mold. It is a legitimate fear. It can cause physical harm to sensitive people who are exposed to it. But, the type and amount of harm are uncertain.

Explore the two different methods used to calculate a wall panel’s capacity to resist applied lateral loads.
- Everyone buying raw materials for structural components or conventional framing applications is purchasing design values and related properties for use in engineering equations to resist loads for a given load path.
- It is not well known that lumber design values are global in nature and not specific to the piece of lumber being used.
- Design values written into the building code become the law, whether they are scientifically correct or not.
- If the law is treated forthrightly as written, professional engineers have great value in the market.
A company is acquired for its earnings, but valued for its EBITDA percentage.
Component manufacturers (CMs) and their suppliers went to Capitol Hill this May to help their Congressional lawmakers understand how the structural component manufacturing industry can be a valuable bellwether for our nation’s economic health. Indeed, the improving economy was evident in the increase over last year’s conference attendance. This year, 59 lawmakers were visited, but more importantly, 19 states were represented by 31 attendees.
why accurate design values are so vital to structural design.
Introduction: Why the Interior Finish Installation Is Important
Mold contamination is becoming a nationwide concern among homeowners and builders. Mold in homes and mold lawsuits have gained extensive media coverage from talk shows to feature articles in national publications. Even Erin Brockovich is making news in the mold litigation arena. Insurance companies are becoming increasingly concerned as well. They feel that they are unfairly bearing the brunt of the expense in remediating mold, thereby leading to revisions in homeowner and builder/contractor liability policies.
