Building Designers need to account for the dead and live loads of fire sprinkler systems, in addition to the other load requirements imposed under the model building codes. Truss Designers are responsible for incorporating the additional load from the fire sprinkler systems into the truss design. The information in this Research Report is applicable to both floor and roof systems. Only vertical loads from fire sprinkler systems are discussed; lateral loads, where required, should be evaluated separately by a Registered Design Professional.

The repair and modification of metal plate connected wood trusses can be a very complicated subject, because each situation must be analyzed individually. This Research Report will give an overview of the fundamental principles behind truss repair that inform the truss designer’s approach in all truss scenarios.
The prescriptive residential energy code requirements found in the 2009, 2012 and 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) include requirements for continuous insulation at foundations in several climate zones. This Research Report discusses the issue of cantilevered sill plates supporting metal plate connected wood trusses installed parallel and perpendicular to the foundation walls where there is a potential for discontinuous planes between the exterior wall above the sill plate and the foundation insulation planes.
This Research Report provides a clear perspective on truss plant quality assurance and third party inspections as they relate to the requirements developed by the International Code Council (ICC) within the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC). The same perspective outlined in this Research Report should be applied when discussing how all structural building component third party inspections relate to Chapter 17 special inspection requirements.
A lay-on gable frame is typically connected from the top during truss placement, but after sheathing is installed, this connection is no longer visible for the building inspector to verify. This creates a need for an alternate connection that is visible from below. The goal of this Research Report is to analyze a simple, cost-effective, toe nail connection between the lay-on gable frames and supporting truss system that is visible after sheathing is installed.

How long does it take to frame a house? It depends. The 2015 BCMC Build project is making it possible to answer that question by framing two identical houses side by side. Watch the project's progress via live webcams on the jobsite.
A fire endurance rating may be mandated by code for many of the applications where trusses could be used in floor/ceiling, roof/ceiling or in attic separation applications. This Research Report discusses 5 different methods for determining fire resistance.
ASCE/SEI 7-10, Minimum Design Loads of Buildings and Other Structures, lists two methods for calculating wind pressures: Main Wind Force Resisting System (MWFRS) and Components & Cladding (C&C). This report will provide information to assist the building designer in deciding upon the appropriate analysis method for uplift due to wind loading.
It can be often misunderstood whether Truss Designers have the responsibility to seal a Truss Placement Diagram (TPD). The purpose of this Research Report is to provide the relevant code sections from the International Building Code (IBC) and the California Building Code for a thorough analysis and interpretation.
It can be often misunderstood whether a Truss Design Engineer has the responsibility to seal a Truss Placement Diagram (TPD). The purpose of this Research Report is to provide the relevant code sections from the latest editions of the International Building Code (IBC) for thorough analysis and interpretation.
The goal of this Research Report is to assist in designing safe buildings economically, especially when sprinkler systems are required or desired in the design.
- Given how dependent we are on each other, you could argue our relationships with our suppliers are more important than any other.
- Respect and trust are qualities that separate our “go-to” suppliers from everyone else out there.
- Look up and down your supply chain and encourage the companies you respect and trust to participate either in SBCA OQMs or in chapter meetings.
The theme for BCMC 2015 is Building Innovation, Framing Success. This year we are going to take a look back at the last 35 years of the BCMC show and highlight the ways it has enhanced the structural components industry’s ability to foster innovation throughout light-frame building construction. To do this right, we need your help.
Early in the new year is always a great time to make resolutions on how to improve your life (and your business). Here’s a look at five powerful things component manufacturers (CM) can resolve to do in 2015.
Usually, a picture is worth a thousand words, except when it is worth a million “ooohs” and “aaahs.”

- In order to illustrate how important it is to make connections, build friendships and, ultimately, reap the benefits of giving back, Rick shares his past experiences and influencers.
- Rick became the leader he is today through being led by others who had a long-term vision for the companies he was a part of, and for the industry as a whole.
- The SBCA Board is currently considering the development of an “Emerging Leaders” program to give our industry’s next generation of leaders an opportunity to begin networking with each other today.
In March, SBCA undertook ASTM E119 floor assembly fire testing at NGC Testing Services in Buffalo, NY.
This flow chart has taken the informal approach of dealing with industry issues in the past and provided a framework that better delineates a process that any TPI or SBCA member can become engaged in.
- Sometimes the benefit of building a relationship is just the sense of camaraderie, but other times, the value can be much more profound for your business.
- Having a close working relationship with your local building officials can not only help you better navigate code changes and jobsite inspection issues, it can help increase market acceptance of your products.
- Forming relationships with your state lawmakers is an easy process, and given their broad connections throughout your community, they’re good people to get to know.
Fairbanks Truss Company in Fairbanks, AK, held a plant tour last month for 20 students in the Fire Science Building Construction class at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. Afterward, the instructor (who is also a Captain at nearby Steese Fire Dept.) said he found it informative and a worthwhile experience for his students by giving them a unique hands-on exposure to modern roof construction.
Villaume Industries was incorporated 134 years ago, and it has stayed in business by sticking to the leading edge of innovation.
- Talent will only get you so far; hard work and determination are the keys to success in both sports and business.
- What are some ways you can work together with your fellow employees to reach your full potential?
- SBCA provides a great opportunity for CMs to work together to achieve greater goals than if they worked alone.
