Information On Frt Roof Trusses

Question:

I need to obtain some information on fire-retardant-treated roof trusses.

Answer:

There is an article written by Jerry Winandy, a research scientist with the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), about fire-retardant-treated wood that is included in section 20 of SBCA’s Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Handbook.

Search the FPL website for “fire-retardant-treated” to find additional information on fire retardant treated lumber.

Section 6.4.9.2 of the Truss Plate Institute's ANSI/TPI 1 discusses metal connector plates installed in FRT.

If you are concerned with corrosion problems of fire retardants on metal connector plates, many studies address that issue. Some of the following fire-retardant treatment suppliers have done corrosion studies and should be able to provide you with additional information on the design value adjustments and corrosion issues:

• Flameproof (FlameTech)

• Exterior Wood, Inc. (Dricon) (FRX)

• Viance Treated Wood Solutions (D-Blaze)

• Hickson Corporation (Wolmanized Wood)

• Hoover Treated Wood Products, Inc.(Pyro-Guard)

• Koppers Performance Chemicals (purchased Osmose, Inc.) (FirePro)
